Columbia County Men’s League
What’s the best thing about retirement (or a flexible work schedule)? It could be the Columbia County Men’s League.
The Columbia County Men’s League, now in its 11th year, is composed of 15 teams from all five curling clubs in the county. Games are held on Mondays, with draws at 10:00 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Each week, the team with the bye hosts and prepares lunch for everyone. Only Portage (four sheets) can accommodate all seven games in the two draws. When a team from a smaller club hosts, additional games are played in the morning at a nearby club, but everyone usually gathers for lunch and traditional curling camaraderie.

Happy December, Poynette! With turkey eating and deer hunting in the rear view mirror, we have a few solid weeks of winter leagues ahead before our next holiday break.
I did some updating of rosters, tuned a few phone number and email addresses, and tried to get the schedules into a format that prints out on single, 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. See the links above to make your own copies for around the house, bathroom, etc. I’m also bringing back a Fall League 2010 favorite, up-to-date win/loss records. I’ll tally every few weeks as time permits. Two important details: a) results are mostly accurate and b) no wagering. It’s all for fun.
Finally, if you have a change of email, phone, or go into witness protection, make a note somewhere on the rosters at the club. I’ll pick things up occasionally and revise as necessary. Likewise, if winters are getting long, spouses are getting on your nerves and/or kids are unbearable, add yourself to the sub list! It always nice to have a deep pool of people to contact when you need it.
Take a moment to remember Leslie Nielsen and Men with Brooms. I’m looking for some pants like that.
.
Good curling.
The Goldline Candy Store is Coming to Town

Let me cut to the chase here. A little birdie tells me that Debbie McCormick got the keys to the 22ft. Goldline “mobile candy store on wheels” from our friends up in Canada. She’s planning to setup shop at the Poynette Curling Club on Wednesday and Thursday September 15th and 16th. (There were plans to stick around all weekend during the Stix ‘n Stones Bonspiel as well, but that’s cancelled.)
Basically, you need to be thinking about a strategy right now.
1. Come a little early or stay a little late? Arriving an hour early to your draw requires a bit of pre-planning. Staying late cuts into the after party. John’s Pro Tip™: Make plans for both.
2. Think about what needs upgrading. If your answer is nothing, think harder. John’s Pro Tip™: Use this as an opportunity to question the wear on your buddy’s broom. If he/she is being cheap, at least you’ve planted a little doubt and you can use this as evidence next time you hog it.
3. For many, the presents both a problem and an opportunity. Problem: ”I’d like a new carbon fiber sweeper. However, it’s still a bit early to call this my Christmas present from the kids. It’s also too late for Labor Day.” Opportunity: John’s Pro Tip™: ”Honey, when was the last time you supported an Olympic athlete?” If that doesn’t fly, counter with John’s Super Pro Tip™: ”We save on shipping!”
Keep an eye out this week. Stop by and take a look. Email my wife (ijesspederson@gmail.com) and explain what an awesome opportunity this is. Thank you.
