Curling in Las Vegas!

without comments

To: USCA Club & Regional Presidents

Hi everyone,

I launched the third and final contest of the summer this afternoon. The third contest is a trip to Las Vegas on Halloween weekend to curl in the bonspiel there. For a $25 donation, you can be entered for a chance to win this awesome trip – airfare, hotel, 1 spot in the SinSitySpiel.

Please help me out in promoting this contest. Send a direct email to your personal contact list, post the link on your personal Facebook page, call your Grandma and tell her that this is a great contest, tell your teammates…anyone who will listen. And, if you’re on the East Coast, you have luck on your side. The winners of our first two contests were BOTH from the Schenectady (NY) Curling Club!!

Here is the link: http://www.curlingrocks.net/contest

Thank you in advance! As always, your personal donations are welcome.

The contest ends Sept. 12.

Cheers,

Terry Kolesar

2011 Autumn Curling Leagues Registration Open

without comments

It’s that time of year!

Autumn curling in Poynette is on!  The ice house is being cooled and we’ll start flooding soon.

Team registrations have been rolling in steadily.  The Poynette Curling Club board recently approved bringing in a new sheet of rocks on a “trial loan” arrangement with the USCA for the fall leagues.

Our leagues run Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings beginning September 6 and ending October 27.  There will be two draws each evening: 6:15 and 8:30.  Rates are $125 per curler, $55 per curler for “sub only” participants.  Curling is open to all interested curlers, regardless of club affiliation.  All leagues are open format, no point limit, no fussing.

Download and submit team entry form or email David Carlson drcportagewi@frontier.com by September 2, 2011 if you are interested in getting involved.

2011 Curl for a Cure Bonspiel

without comments

In it’s 9th year, Poynette’s Curl for a Cure Bonspiel passed the $20,000 mark in raising money towards cancer research at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center.  In 2003, friends and family of Eileen Wild started this fundraiser not only to raise money, but to also raise awareness of the true nature of lung cancer, noting that early detection is key and that it’s not just a smokers’ disease.

This year’s event expanded over past years, bringing 20 teams and spanning into a 3rd day for the championship brackets.  In the end, Team Marquardt (Kurt Marquardt, Betty Marquardt, Kelly Smith, and Shauna Smith) edged Team Falk (Brittany Falk, Cody Falk, Kelsey Saager, and John Bauer), needing an extra end and a few inches of ice.

Special thanks to Barney, Jeanette, Jim, and Julie along with all of the others who volunteered time to make this an awesome event.  Your efforts are very much appreciated.

Follow this link for a number of great photos taken at the 2011 Curl for a Cure.

Skipping Stones: Curling Olympian from China Playing in Poynette

Hey curlers!

Alex Ebert from the Portage Daily Register visited the Poynette Curling Club this week to write a nice story about the Chinese Women’s Olympic Skip Betty Wang grabbing a little practice during the fall league.  Take a look!

Fall Curling Underway!

The fall curling season began this past week here at Poynette Curling Club with full leagues running Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings.  The early ice typically brings folks from surrounding clubs including US Women’s Olympic skip Debbie McCormick.  This fall we also have Chinese Women’s Olympic skip Bingyu “Betty” Wang curing a few nights a week as she goes to school at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.  Betty led her team to the bronze medal in Vancouver earlier this year.    Special thanks to Dave Carlson for doing the organizing and to the many folks from Madison Curling Club as well as surrounding clubs that make these leagues possible.

Fall Raffle Event

Poynette Curling Club’s Fall Raffle Party takes place Saturday, September 25, 2010.  6:00 – 10:00pm at the Poynette Village Hall at 106 South Main Street here in Poynette, Wisconsin.  Open bar, beefy sandwiches, hors d’oeuvres.  Tickets are $50.00 which admits you and another human being.  Every 10th ticket drawn wins at least $100.00, sometimes $200.00, on lucky dog will walk away with $3,000.  See Don Jackson if you are interested and don’t have a ticket.

Stix ‘n Stones Fall 2010 Cancelled

Peter Caldwell made a valiant attempt at pulling together a fall version of the famous Stix ‘n Stones Bonspiel (curl -> golf -> curl -> fun).  Alas, it’s really difficult gathering momentum for bonspieling at this time of the year.  We’ll let the anticipation build and get this taken care of sometime in the spring of 2011.

Planning a Bonspiel?

I’m hearing bits, pieces, and rumors of bonspiels being planned during the upcoming season at the Poynette Curling Club.  If you have dates and ideas, please pass them on to me so that I can get them onto the club calendar and help in getting the word out.   (John Pederson – ijohnpederson@gmail.com)

Club Cleanup Day – Saturday, August 21, 2010

without comments

Bar Thinks They Have Curling Figured Out | The Onion - America_s Finest News Source.jpgWe had a very successful spring league and spring bonspiel with the ice shut off June 1. This summer a number of projects have been worked on. The basement has been tiled and for the first time in years it is dry, but work continues on the clean up and painting there. The lobby floor has received a coat of epoxy paint and looks great. The north end in the ice area has had the mold cleaned and a fresh coat of paint

We now are making plans for fall ice and we need your help for a major clean-up work day!

There is clean up and work that needs to be done in the ice area, the kitchen, the lobby, the bathrooms, and the club room.  This is both men’s and women’s work day starting at 8:00 am Saturday, Aug 21, 2010.

Please call (635-2197) or email (teeter034@centurytel.net) Dean Teeter if you are coming,  we need your help!
